Unlike conventional straight-wall baskets, the IKAPE Step-Down Basket features a unique 58mm or 54mm opening that tapers to a 32mm base, creating a deeper coffee puck that promotes more even extraction, reduced channeling, and enhanced sweetness.

The smaller internal diameter increases puck depth while allowing you to use a coarser grind size compared to traditional baskets. This slows water flow through the coffee bed, improving extraction uniformity and reducing harsh bitterness and astringency. The result is a richer, sweeter espresso with improved body, aroma, and mouthfeel.

Designed to sit flush with the bottom of the portafilter, the IKAPE basket is compatible with standard bottomless and spouted portafilters without an extended tail, making it suitable for most tamping stations and portafilter holders.

The tapered design naturally builds brewing pressure, making it possible to extract espresso without tamping when paired with the appropriate grind size. Alternatively, use your favourite WDT tool, distributor and tamper for even greater consistency.

Brewing Recommendations

• Use a coarser grind than you would with a conventional basket.
• Light and ultra-light roasts perform best with a relatively coarser grind to encourage higher extraction.
• Medium-dark and dark roasts produce enhanced sweetness, fuller body and smoother mouthfeel.
• If no espresso flows during extraction, adjust to a coarser grind.
• When using a puck screen, the 38mm basket is recommended to provide additional headspace.
